Newcastle vs Liverpool – Premier League Preview!

Posted on March 30, 2012 by Holly Haines

Despite being a close 6th and 7th on the Premier League table, it will be two very opposite teams meeting at St James Park this Sunday. Newcastle are on good form and have undoubtedly had one of their best seasons, a mere 5 points off a Champions League spot. Liverpool however are struggling in the league – if they carry on recent form they’ll be lucky to remain in the top 7.

Newcastle will be thankful they are at home for this important fixture, having remained unbeaten in their last 6 at the Sports Direct Arena. They also have the upper hand over the Reds in their goal scoring potential. The big criticism against Liverpool this season has been their inability to finish chances, but Newcastle evidently have not been experiencing the same problem.

With the seemingly unstoppable strike force of Ba and Cisse, Liverpool will know their defence are in for a lot of hard work to prevent the ball hitting the back of their net. And with the Reds having only one clean sheet in the last nine games, this does not look too likely an outcome for Liverpool when they are faced with two on form, top level strikers.

But Liverpool’s disappointing defence is just one factor in a whole lot of problems contributing to their inconsistent form. The squad know from the way they have played in the league in 2012, winning just two games, they are letting their fans down. An entirely transformed side need to be walking out at St James’ this Sunday if they are to have any hope of winning.

Both teams are going to be missing vital players for the tie. Newcastle have doubts for Coloccini, Tiote and Taylor. And due to his injury picked up against QPR, Charlie Adam will miss the fixture – an undoubtedly big blow to Liverpool.

Both Carroll and Enrique will be ready to put on a good performance for their former home crowd, helping their side to close the 8 point gap between the two clubs. But, my prediction is going to have to be a Newcastle win in this game @ 3.10 on Oddslife. I think Liverpool will display improved form compared to recent disappointing performances, but their problem of not being able to finish chances will prove their downfall.

The strong strike force Newcastle have are not going to be missing chances. The Reds are going to need to be a completely different side, otherwise they could be suffering a very embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Geordies this weekend.
