Fifa Ballon D'Or

FIFA World Team of the Year Predictions, Ballon D’or, Goal of the Year and more

Posted on December 30, 2012 by Joe Plewes

It’s that time of the year where awards are thrown out with reckless abandon and the nitty gritty of league football is swapped for a glitzy ceremony in Switzerland. Among the prizes handed out on the 7th of January will be the  much coveted Ballon d’or award, awards for the coach of the year,  women’s player of the year, the fair play award and more. So first off, the big one:

Fifa Ballon D’or

Up until a couple of months ago there might have been a little bit more of a debate about this one. This year, Cristiano Ronaldo won a La Liga title, became the first player to score in six successive clasicos and netted three times at Euro 2012. Yet the Portuguese winger has an endured a slightly indifferent start to this La Liga season by his own lofty standards and for the most part has been eclipsed by the devastating form of Lionel Messi. The forward’s ninety-one goals make him a sure favourite for the honour, while Andres Iniesta – who won player of the tournament at Euro 2012 – could potentially sneak into second.

Messi or Ronaldo for this year’s Ballon D’or though? It’s got to be the former.

Coach of the Year

A few names always stand out here, and with the final shortlist of three revealed at the end of November it’s no surprise to see Jose Mourinho on the list. The Portuguese boss led Real Madrid to a record breaking season, winning La Liga with an incredible tally of 100 points. Things have turned a little sour over the last couple of months as rifts with key players become apparent, but he still appears favourite.

This is especially so thanks to the appearance of Pep Guardiola in the final three, who surely can’t take the glory having only managed for half of the year and lost out to Mourinho in the title race. The only other candidate is Vicente Del Bosque who added a European Championship to his impressive array of silverware, but as jobs go the Spain one surely isn’t a particularly tricky one?

Our vote for coach of the year would have perhaps gone to Europa League winning boss Diego Simeone, who has also led Athletico Madrid to second place in La Liga and got the best out of Radamel Falcao.

Fifa World Team of the Year Predictions

There are some stellar names on the 55-man list for this year’s world XI, and we’ve picked eleven that really stand out. Names unlucky to be left off our final eleven include Robin van Persie, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jordi Alba and Andrea Barzagli, who for some reason wasn’t included in the shortlist despite a fantastic year for Juventus and Italy while the likes of David Luiz and Gareth Bale were included as defenders. Here’s our team of the year:

GK: Gianluigi Buffon
RB: Philipp Lahm
CB: Gerard Pique
CB: Vincent Kompany
LB: Ashley Cole
CM: Andres Iniesta
CM: Andrea Pirlo
CM: Yaya Toure
FW: Lionel Messi
FW: Radamel Falcao
FW: Cristiano Ronaldo

Fifa Puskas Award

Finally, there’s the award for the best goal of the year. Last year Neymar’s dazzling run won the day, and he’s made the final three once again for his goal against Internacional (it’s fair to say the defending isn’t the best in this one)! With Falcao’s shortlisted goal scored in an inconsequential friendly, our vote for the goal of the year has to go to former Chelsea wideman Miroslav Stoch for his brilliantly controlled volley shown below:
