2012/13 to mark Torres’ resurgence!

Posted on August 9, 2012 by Andrew Younger

Form is temporary, class is permanent. For 18 months this is the old footballing adage that Chelsea fans have been using to defend their out of sorts No.9.

Since his £50 million move from Liverpool, Fernando Torres has scored an underwhelming 12 goals in 67 games in what has been a frustrating year and a half in his career. However, since Roberto Di Matteo took charge of the club, there have been signs that El Nino has been slowly returning to the form which saw him widely regarded as the best striker in the world while on Merseyside.

Since March 2012, Torres has scored 7 of his 12 Chelsea goals including the winning goal in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona and a hat-trick in the West-London derby against QPR to suggest that he is still capable of rekindling his Liverpool magic. This run of form was followed by a successful Euro 2012 campaign which saw Torres finish with a winners medal and the golden boot (3 goals), thus showing he can still perform on the big stage; not a bad way to rebuild your confidence.

With Didier Drogba leaving for China this summer, Chelsea need Torres more than ever and this season could be the most important of the Spaniards career. Giving Torres the mantle of becoming their number one striker resembles a risk given his previous form in blue. However, a new found feeling of importance could lead to him thriving next season as their main man upfront. Much like his best form at Liverpool, Torres has had his best games for Chelsea while playing in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Juan Mata taking up Steven Gerrard’s old role as his supporting striker.

With the summer additions of attacking playmakers Eden Hazard and Oscar, Torres will not find himself short of service and if he can get on the same wavelength as these two, like he has done with Mata, the goals could soon come flooding back.

All ifs and buts aside, it remains to be seen whether we will ever see the Fernando Torres that lit up Anfield so many times, but with Di Matteo’s new look squad there wont be a better time for him to prove he can.
