Wimbledon Day 3: Makarova vs Kerber
Posted on June 27, 2012 by Sam Foster
World number 8 Angelique Kerber has gradually been creeping into the upper reaches of Grand Slam betting markets, and the recent Eastbourne finalist should be able to get the win that sees her match her best ever effort here when reaching the third round in 2010. That lack of success here at Wimbledon may have been a concern if it was not for the German’s excellent week in Eastbourne as preparation for SW19.
Kerber lost out narrowly in the final but it was a continuation of her excellent form which saw her reach the semi-final in Rome before making it to the last eight at Rolland Garros. Her second round opponent cannot be taken lightly as Russian born Ekaterina Makarova has already shown this year at Birmingham and Eastbourne that she can cope with the surface.
However, after making the semi-final in Birmingham Makarova then played Kerber in the quarter finals at Eastbourne, a game that she lost badly. Subsequently it would take a sizeable leap of faith to believe that in such a short period and on a bigger stage, the lower ranked woman would be able to reverse the form.
Your Wimbledon Predictor selection here is for Angelique Kerber to continue her march to the second week with a straight sets win, thus upholding the form of last week.
